When people think of a pump in a fire protection system, they usually think of a large centrifugal fire pump supplying water to sprinklers or hydrants.

A micro gear pump serves a very different purpose.

It is generally used where the fire protection equipment needs controlled, relatively small-volume liquid delivery, particularly when the system requires accurate dosing, stable pressure, compact installation or reliable transfer of a specific fire suppression liquid.

Typical applications can include foam concentrate proportioning, specialized fire suppression equipment, new energy battery fire protection systems and other auxiliary fluid-control circuits.

Where Are Micro Gear Pumps Used in Fire Protection Systems?

1. Foam Concentrate Dosing and Proportioning

One of the clearest applications is the controlled delivery of foam concentrate.

In a foam fire suppression system, water and foam concentrate must be mixed at a specified proportion before the finished foam solution is discharged.

The concentrate flow may be much smaller than the main water flow, making a positive-displacement pump useful for controlled injection.

For example, electronically controlled foam proportioning systems can use a rotary gear pump to inject foam concentrate according to measured water flow. Commercial firefighting systems already use positive-displacement rotary gear pumps for this purpose.

The micro gear pump can therefore perform tasks such as:

These systems may need compact pumps to transfer fire suppression, cooling or protective fluids through relatively small pipelines.

Pay Attention to Foam and Suppression Agent Viscosity

This is especially important when selecting a pump for foam systems.

Not all foam concentrates behave like water.

The NFPA Research Foundation notes that modern fluorine-free foam concentrates can cover a very wide viscosity range, with some formulations behaving as non-Newtonian or pseudo-plastic fluids. This can significantly affect proportioning equipment performance.

Before selecting a micro gear pump, provide:

● Fire suppression agent or foam type
● Brand and chemical composition if available
● Concentration
● Viscosity
● Minimum and maximum temperature
● Required dosing rate
● Required inlet and outlet pressure

Pump selection based only on a nominal L/min value can lead to incorrect performance.
